The Wave Pictures – Bamboo Diner in the Rain
‘Pool Hall’ is the new single by Silent Radio favourites (and two times guests on our radio show here & here) The Wave Pictures, taken from their forthcoming album Bamboo Diner in the Rain, due out on Moshi Moshi on 11 November. Following on from last year’s Billy Childish collaboration Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon and their recent acoustic record A Season in Hull, Bamboo Diner in the Rain sees The Wave Pictures battling against the robot music apocalypse. The new album is a bluesy, boozy love letter to the guitar, filled with American Primitive instrumentals, John Lee Hooker chugs and Link Wray style minor-key surf music.
Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Dave Tattersall discusses the track ‘Pool Hall’: “They really have closed down the pool hall in East London, where we used to play all night long, fuelled by Fosters and the cheese toasties they made behind the bar. Your past gets closed down bit by bit. What Pool Halls and cheese toasties does my future hold?”
“Of course, we live in a bankrupt culture, one that celebrates bongo pop morons and largely ignores the real thing. So we can’t really be surprised anymore when our pool halls get shut down. Everyone is staying home, interfacing with their machines.”
This track slows down marginally in the last minute. Good. You won’t find a click-track at any of our recording sessions. I choose instead to think of this as a deepening of the groove, as occurs in the last minute of “Speedo” by The Cadillacs, the greatest record ever made. There were no robots to contend with in The Cadillacs’ days.
“The verses here relate to Elvis as portrayed by Kurt Russell in John Carpenter’s made-for-TV masterpiece, “Elvis”. I feel fairly confident in saying that I’m the only person in the world who would have attempted this juxtaposition. Am I genius? It’s not for me to say. But yes, yes I am.”
