I remember where I was when I first heard Kojo Funds. 2018, in the back of my parent’s car on the radio and he has not left my rotation ever since. Being a giant in the Afroswing scene is not an easy feat. Hearing songs like ‘Dun Talkin’ with Abracadabra or ‘Check’ with Raye. There was a time where you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing him and now he is back with a new EP titled ‘Hello it’s me again’.

The EP starts with ‘Long time’ which for me is the clear highlight on this project, The beat is something slightly reminiscent of the Pharell Williams’ production but with an Afroswing twist not to mention how great Kojo executes on the song. It must be in contest for song of the summer! Now to ‘Problems’ which is such a feel-good song that does well to serve as a love song as well, this would work very well in a festival setting and I would build a setlist around it. Then it gets to ‘Ready’ which is one of the weaker songs on here, Kojo uses more of a dancehall cadence on this one and there are some parts of the song that shows promise (the chorus for example) but the verses fall flat ever so slightly on here, with a bit more refinement I do think he could thrive in this sound though. After that we get ‘With you’ which has more of a slow, love song approach which Kojo pulls off quite well. At the very least the instrumental for this reminds me of ‘My Lover’ by Not3s but still comes off as authentic. Now ‘How many’ it’s another jumpy party anthem that does well to get you moving, a song I would recommend for the party playlist! Unfortunately, the EP ends on its weakest song with ‘I Need’. Kojo Funds is brilliant at creating a catchy hook and he does that well on this song however this song for me ends up being catchy in an annoying sense rather than it being pleasant. The verses work well but the stretched autotune vocals on the hook is what throws me off.

This project blends very nicely with all the songs having that staple Kojo Funds summer feeling to it, almost making the songs feel nostalgic in a way. However, I wish I could’ve heard more features on here, with him releasing ‘079’ with Jay Silva earlier on in the year, it would have been nice to see them collaborate again.

Overall, this EP is a breath of fresh air when it comes to summer songs in the UK. With a successful EP it will always have you wishing there were more songs on this project. But at the end of the day, it is a reintroduction to his music almost as if Kojo is saying Hello it’s me again.
