From time to time, one of our contributors will recommend an artist/band they think deserves  your attention. No record labels, PR companies, bands or band’s management will ever have made these recommendations. It is simply one music fan putting their taste on the line in the hope of sharing good music. The questions are intended to give just a basic introduction to possibly your new favourite artist/band.

So without further ado, let’s crack on with another introduction, in which Silent Radio’s editor Simon Poole recommends Snippet for your audible delectation.

Who are ya?

Snippet is one man – Johnno Casson

Where are you from?

Hackney/London born, now based in sunny Colchester,Essex.

How long have you been doing what you’re doing now?

I’ve been making music since I was 15,so more years than I have fingers.

Snippet is celebrating 10 years in the game, the earliest years of which were mostly spent having a family & holding down a full time job so there was only time to write very short sound collages-hence how the name Snippet originated.

Is being a musician your full time job?

Music in different guises is all I do.

Are there any obvious influences in your music?

So much music has entered my psyche I leave it to people to come up with their own view of what comes out in the music when ,lately they’ve said Beck, BabyBird, Jim Noir, Brain Wilson, The Bees, Ray Davies, Scritti Pollitti, Squeeze, even Ivor Cutler – What do you reckon? – http://www.snippetcuts.co.uk/music.html

Are there any not so obvious influences in your music?

Obscure American funk from the 70’s, the finest unknown electronic pop music from the 80’s, trippy glitchy electronica from the 90’s & esoteric youtube videos of men with old keyboards & older organs.

Any musical Guilty Pleasures? Come on you can share, we’re all friends here!

God, I could keep you up all night with them, a short answer is I was once known to do crazily sexy dances to George Michael’s ‘Outside’, and no I will not be sharing video evidence of this 😉

Apart from yourself of course, what other band/artist would you recommend our readers check out?

So many deserving artists out there, the best music out there will be found in the margins, growing out of the independent music ’community’.

The list will change every week but I think Sweet Baboo is brill, Alex Highton’s new album is sounding excellent in preview and MyLittle Brother’s album If We Never Came Down is never off the stereophonic radiogram at Snippet Towers. Really rate Martin Case & Colorama plus Gruff Rhys latest album is sublime, definite album of the year material. Oh and Old Tramp is the best thing since sliced Battenberg.

Tell us about the defining moment when you thought ‘Fuck, yes I want to be a musician!’

Watching Top of The Pops & listening to the chart show on Radio 1 when I was 14,it made something ignite in my brain that felt so exciting & full of future possibilities. Music is a great friend to have, it won’t let you down or laugh at you or go off with your new girlfriend in her pretty floral dress-actually no-scrub that-it might do all those things-its that powerful

.I bow my head in respect o great one.

Does what go on, on tour, stay on tour?

No, nowadays its spread all over Twitter, Facebook & YouTube in all its mucky detail & the really filthy depraved stuff will be on Pinterest.

What’s your most favourite gig (as a gig goer)?

The Jam,Michael Sobell Centre,Islington

Who, in your wildest dreams would you like to collaborate with/be produced by?

Working with Gruff Rhys would be really fun.

Would have loved to work with Marvin Gaye and produced Billie Holiday.

I reckon me and Damon Albarn would come up with some sterling stuff and Chas Jankel, Richard Russell & Kwes can produce, with a cheeky EP produced by Mark Nevers & Kurt Wagner.

Anything to declare?

Yes, I don’t live in a shed and it wasn’t me that did that in the bath. Phew, glad to get that off my chest ,it had been bothering me for years.

Snippet-The Sunshine EP is out on Folkwit Records on 21 July
