LIVE: MARIKA HACKMAN / DO NOTHING – 24/02/2020
Marika Hackman -GORILLA, MANCHESTER- First on stage tonight at Gorilla are Nottingham-based four piece Do Nothing, a post-punk band utilising the talk-singing style that is quickly rising back into fashion within the indie scene. Singer Chris Bailey’s live rambling talk/shout vocal style, along with easy comparisons of Talk Show and Dry Cleaning, reminds me of a mix between Dismemberment Plan and the cocky crooning of Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys. It can feel slightly whiny... Read More
APRIL 2019
We have trawled through the forthcoming gigs in and around Manchester so you don’t have to. We believe that if we are going to recommend a gig to you, then it should be exactly that, a recommendation. Our gig guide is handpicked and every act has been listened to before making it onto the list. It has been compiled by the ears of our editors and not by any promoters, band’s management or PR’s. If we’ve missed anything please feel free to plug any gigs in the comments... Read More
LIVE: HOLIDAY GHOSTS / FRUIT TONES – 23/03/2019
Holiday Ghosts -YES (THE BASEMENT), MANCHESTER- I was slightly disparaging about aspects of YES on account of my visit to it on its opening weekend but it’s clear that the rest of Manchester stand in firm disagreement. Walking in to the sound of Joy Division this Saturday night it’s clear that it has managed to sustain the buzz it had created on its opening weekend when I penned my initial thoughts. The bar is still heavily populated and we quickly escape the more aurally... Read More
ALBUM REVIEW: SLEEPER – MODERN AGE
Listening to the new album it is clear Pixes are one of their main influences. The opening track Paradise Waiting has a very much late 80’s/early 90’s sound to it, with a youthful almost cliché’ chorus. It opens the album like a band starting in late teens would trying to break onto the scene. Yet this is 40-year olds trying to make a comeback. The second track and first released single to the album ‘Look at you now’ reminds me very much of an early single ‘Alice... Read More
ALBUM REVIEW: OOZING WOUND – HIGH ANXIETY
Here at Silent Radio, we don’t set store by stars or marks out of ten, but I would be surprised if Oozing Wound’s High Anxiety doesn’t turn out to be my “album of 2019”. I even love the front cover artwork and that hasn’t happened since 10,000 Days. I am going through some difficult times right now, so it’s great to be able to stick in my headphones and let someone else express anger and frustration much better than I could. Oozing Wound does this in spades,... Read More
LIVE: SHARON VAN ETTEN – 22/03/2019
Sharon Van Etten -ALBERT HALL, MANCHESTER- There’s a chance I’ve seen Sharon Van Etten play live once before. It’s 2014 and I’m in idyllic Wales. It’s the second day of Green Man and I’m riding high on that festival wave of ‘I haven’t showered in longer than is socially acceptable but my hair still looks quite good so I think that evens out the questionable aroma that lingers no matter how many baby wipes I use’. Sharon Van Etten plays the main stage, Brecon... Read More
LIVE: DESPERATE JOURNALIST – 15/03/2019
Desperate Journalist -DEAF INSTITUTE, MANCHESTER- The Empty Page A late start (I hear an act pulled out?) affords me enough time to eat a quantity of waffles (potato) before venturing into the vaguely kitsch dwelling we all know as the Deaf Institute. Up first comes a 3-piece heavily rooted in 1990s ‘alternative’ rock, though sadly it doesn’t appear that they have blended their influences into anything beyond derivation. To elaborate, the style of the guitar playing seems... Read More
LIVE: RUTH THEODORE – 16/03/2019
Ruth Theodore -THE CASTLE HOTEL, MANCHESTER- Supporting act Cupids Arrow deliver quite an eclectic mix for a cello duo. From the upbeat heights of the Tetris theme tune to haunting ravines of Hungarian folk. They are strong and interesting to watch. The set finishes with a great cover of Elbow’s ‘Grounds For Divorce’, one they say they cannot include in their usual wedding shows, and they smile with a chance to play it. Ruth Theodore is in Manchester for only the third... Read More
LIVE: THE BLACK DELTA MOVEMENT – 15/03/2019
The Black Delta Movement -NIGHT AND DAY CAFE, MANCHESTER- I first met Matt Burr, the lead singer of The Black Delta Movement, nine years ago, just before he started the band. His original group, The 303’s, I had played with back in Hull, and from that day I always got a good vibe from Matt; he was always happy to help and quickly became a well-known name around the Hull music scene, DJ’ing, promoting nights and of course being the lead singer of The Black Delta Movement. Over... Read More
