After both moving into the area last year, independent promoters Grey Lantern and Bad Uncle were keen to put Levenshulme’s Klondyke Social Club firmly back on the gigging map. Fast forward a few months and the two come together this weekend to throw a Box Social for the ages! Ten live acts, DJs, and independent record label fair and more besides are set to descend on south-east Manchester for a truly eclectic day of music.
The live line-up includes Strasbourg math-rockers Electric Electric and Lyon party punk four-piece Sport; also travelling from outside the M60 are Faux Discx Records’ (Hookworms, Women, Cold Pumas) signings Housewives, from London, while, Leeds’ Devo-esque new wavers Cowtown and Liverpool’s brilliantly weird morph-suit wearing noise group Barberos travel laterally to join us.
We say a sad goodbye to local emo party monsters Well Wisher, who will play their last gig together before taking an indefinite break; meanwhile Akoustik Anarkhy groove addicts Plank! also appear, as they continue to build up to their forthcoming second album. Garage rock two-piece Bad Grammar, Alcopop! Records punk four-piece Doctrines and the psych hypnotism of Championlovers complete the live bill.
A big part of the day is about forging links between as many pockets of Manchester’s music community as we can, and so we’re delighted to also be hosting an independent record fair as part of the event, featuring Sways Records, recent Manchester residents Gizeh, and Islington Mill-based Baptists & Bootleggers, Little Red Rabbits and ONO Records. Local illustrator himHallows will also be selling his wares, while club night DJs Turn It Out will both be setting up a distro outlet for local artists and DJing throughout the day.
With vegan chilli on sale and a couple of real ales on draught specially for the occasion, Grey Lantern and Bad Uncle’s first Box Social promises a treat for the eyes, ears and taste buds.
