Picture your honeymoon destination, the sun is setting, you’re drinking something tropical, even a cocktail if you partake. All you need is a soundtrack to make the memories. Welcome to ‘November Scorpio’ by Tiana Major9

Well, as far as instrumentation and the overall sound of the project goes, this could be a perfect soundtrack for a honeymoon. However, Tiana going headfirst into her debut album, explores themes of self-love and her feelings towards her previous partners.  This project feels like something to soundtrack a late-night walk, or just simply laying on your bed, that sort of vibe. But at the same time, it’s something you’d want to listen to for your own comfort and peace of mind.

Personally, I feel like R&B is such a beautiful genre, but it can become so mundane and boring with subject matter that stays the same. Don’t get me wrong I like to dabble in a few love songs here and there but if I am hearing an artist reminisce over their lover 24/7, I will get bored. Luckily with Tiana’s performances you get a range of subject matter from financial struggles her family faced on ‘Money’ to a few bits of reminiscing on ‘Alone’. I do feel like she does quite well to stray away from that with ‘Shook One’ which features the infamous Mobb deep sample. The concept on ‘Shook one’ creates quite an interesting listen with her using a more rap influenced cadence on the track. You don’t really hear much sampling in R&B, so that was very much a highlight on the album. The collab with Yebba was my biggest highlight on here, ‘Always’ sees their melodies link together very well whilst both reliving their past relationships. That’s the song I go back to from this album the most by a country mile.

My gripes on this project come from the fact that a full-length R&B album with no differentiation will sound tedious. The rollout for this album could have done with less single releases as half of the songs I do feel like I have already heard which makes the album seem way quicker than it should be. The songs that are not listed as singles of the album are very similar. Obviously a project is not all about features however none were left for the release date making the album seem more promotional-based as opposed to audience enjoyment, for example the Yebba feature would have been a really pleasant surprise instead of already knowing it is going to be on here which makes it easy to tell this is a debut album.

In summary, I feel like the subject matter is perfectly varied with her telling her audience about her mental health, however the sound of the album does block itself together. It’s an album that feels very concise in its length and nothing really left unfinished, story wise. Everything that’s on here is meant to be on here, but the highlights stick out like a sore thumb. I would recommend this as an album for a nice and cosy listen.
