California’s Gabriel Hart and Tim Paul Gray convey through this lyrical gem lights fading and despair hitting deeply. The talented duo also try to escape the mundane, a humdrum existence, and their song Lucky bolsters their chances of making it through to a utopia fit for living in.

The song is weaved with sweet chords and diligence, and the whole concept hits like a shot of bourbon, strong and sturdy, breaking conventions. It sounds so original too that it’s difficult to put a stamp on it, which in many ways, shows the adeptness of these two able writers/musicians.

Lucky starts acoustically, then the vocals come in hauntingly, absorbing inspiration and candid snapshots. A drunk is on the wire, an alien encounters its first human, and the track breaks into a loud sequence, becoming such a momentous piece of musical flair.

The lyrics are written like an alcohol fuelled story, a fable which transports the listener into a dive bar situation, where the world outside is decaying and the people are all under the constraints of mania. They’re manic, controlled by impulses, staring into an abyss the size of a hammer wielding giant.

Musically, Lucky isn’t simple, and it isn’t pretentious either, it’s glorious in its wholesomeness and complexity, pushing the boundaries, while staying true. It is cathartic, drowning out the happy go lucky sense of feeling, but still, it challenges perceptions and the status quo.

Hotel Mercy is equipped for the long, gritty, walk through dirty towns, pushing their music like a rusty shopping cart into the middle point of disaster, and yet their music has the richness to resonate.
