Twisted Reel – 1991 The Year Punk Broke

In an era where bands like Green Day sounded Punk, Nirvana were Punk. Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon on guitar showed thousands of girls they didn’t just have to follow the band, they could BE the band…They came, they pissed about, they made great music… Sonic Youth and Nirvana shaped a generation.

Twisted Reel, the new Music based film night to hit Manchester follows up their October screening of Wild Style with this great 1993 documentary following the bands on tour.

Nearly twenty years after Kurt Cobain’s death, Dave Markey’s early nineties documentary 1991: The Year Punk Broke gives viewers a chance to see the Nirvana front man in cheerier times. The film follows cult group Sonic Youth on tour in Europe and features Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, Babes in Toyland and other seminal bands of the period. Markey captures the buzz of the bands, many on the edge of major stardom, from backstage shenanigans and Madonna piss-takes to live performances, including one from The Ramones. If you love Sonic Youth or Nirvana or if you’ve ever felt the visceral thrill music of this period can produce, make the 6th December a date in your diary.

Before and after the screening local DJ Rich Coyle will be playing the tunes that made this era great, so get yourselves down to the Castle Hotel for a fab night, GOO on, you know you want to….
