Each week, one of our contributors will recommend an artist/band they think deserves to be brought to your attention. No record labels, PR companies, bands or bands management will ever have made these recommendations. It is simply one music fan putting their taste on the line in the hope of sharing good music. The questions are intended to give just a basic introduction to possibly your new favourite artist/band.

So without further ado, let’s crack on with this week’s introduction, in which Silent Radio’s Victoria Turnbull recommends BEI RU for your audible delectation.

*******

Who are ya?

Producer/Composer/DJ, Bei Ru.

Where are you from?

Los Angeles, CA, U.S.

How long have you been doing what you’re doing now?

About 5 years.

Is being a musician your full time job?

Yes. In addition to my own stuff, I also compose music for film/television licensing.

How would you explain your sound to someone’s 90 year old grandmother?

Melodic, rhythmic, FUNK.

Are there any obvious influences in your music?

Jazz, Funk, & traditional Armenian music, probably the most.

Are there any not so obvious influences in your music?

I’m a huge fan of classical music, but it’s not something you’d necessarily hear in my own stuff.

Apart from yourself of course, what other band/artist would you recommend our readers check out?

My two favorite artists right now are probably Danny Brown & James Blake.

Best place for people to find out what you are up to?

Anything to declare?

Live humble.

The song playing (and also available as a free download exclusively to Silent Radio readers) is ‘The Maiden’, the first song from my album, ‘Little Armenia (L.A.)’. I made use of some samples from some old Armenian records, and added drums, percussion, bass, guitar and a couple other elements to make it sound more funky and psychedelic.
