Psychedelic Porn Crumpets

– Gulliver’s, Manchester –

Debuting the UK and Europe in a manner that can only be described as storming are Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Selling out almost every show on a tour that is witnessing the band for the first time is a fantastic achievement but one that is worth every penny.

Gulliver’s is a unique venue of both intimacy and intensity which is definitely exemplified by the containment of a sold-out room full of people, inevitably resulting in a barrage of heat and exhaustion. However, with the band being nothing but mesmerising, this is quickly overshadowed as the crowd are immersed in a barricade of noise that is beautifully complex and sinuous leaving looks of amazement across faces all round.

The band’s name will expectedly cause a chuckle or two but their talent should not be underestimated despite this.

Opening with the track ‘Gurzl’, immediately, the audience are drawn forwards as the band’s not only unique sound but raw talent is straight away launched out leaving everyone aghast. Despite not venturing into Europe before this week, the crowd are in fine voice for every track, something of which the band is hugely appreciative of, always refreshing to see. Both High Visceral albums titled Part One and Part Two are the main focus of the set interspersed with the band’s latest release Social Candy.

From start to finish, the four Crumpets deliver nothing but high-octane energy, which even in a room of 150 makes the floor bounce and create a similar atmosphere making the venue feel much larger than it is. A band that can make such a small crowd leap around such as they can is nothing but impressive.

The closure of their set is arguably the Crumpets’ most well-known song ‘Cornflake’ which provokes a last burst of madness from a now partially shirtless and sighted, through the lead singer Jack’s steamed up glasses, band and crowd before coming to an emphatic, scorching end met by rapturous applause and praise from all.

There are big things coming for this band. Make no mistake. With Europe selling out on a first tour, Australia already conquered and America yet to be explored into, this band have an enormous future ahead of them which is an understatement given their musical ability and not to mention a sense of inquisition through a somewhat unusual name.
