The Veils have occupied a distinctive place within alternative music for more than two decades, blending literary lyricism with emotionally driven songwriting and an evolving sound. Formed around singer-songwriter Finn Andrews, the band emerged in the early 2000s after Andrews signed to Rough Trade Records at just sixteen years old. Since then, The Veils have released eight studio albums, moving between piano-led ballads, expansive rock arrangements, and atmospheric indie soundscapes while maintaining a strong emotional core. Their music frequently explores themes of love, loss, identity, and mortality, delivered through Andrews’ expressive vocals and poetic writing style.
The band have also earned a reputation for powerful live performances, building a loyal following through extensive touring across Europe, North America, and Australasia. Their work has attracted attention from filmmakers including David Lynch, Tim Burton, and Paolo Sorrentino, all of whom have featured The Veils’ music in their projects. While many artists settle into familiar formulas, The Veils have consistently embraced reinvention, with each album presenting a different perspective on their sound and identity. Finn Andrews’ songwriting often reflects the tradition of classic storytellers who prioritise emotional truth over commercial appeal. There are traces of Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen in his vivid imagery and darker themes, while the band’s atmospheric moments evoke comparisons to Radiohead and Coldplay. However, The Veils never simply imitate their influences. Their music combines lyricism with contemporary indie sensibilities, creating a sound that feels both familiar and unique.
Fragile World represents a new chapter for the band. Released shortly after the introspective Asphodels, the album adopts a more immediate and instinctive approach while retaining the emotional depth that defines The Veils’ work. Recorded live to tape in New Zealand with producer Tom Healy, the record embraces spontaneity, with many arrangements developed during the sessions themselves. Tracks such as “Aurora,” “Are You Awake Tonight?” and “Little White Bird (Fragile World)” highlight the album’s quieter side through delicate piano melodies and restrained dispositions, while songs like “Lungs” and “New Day” bring greater energy and momentum.
“Aurora” opens with a solitary piano note, immediately creating a calm and reflective atmosphere. The melody is simple yet captivating, while the gradual introduction of layered vocals and subtle drums allows the song to build naturally without losing its delicate quality. The progression reminded me of watching the Northern Lights spread across the sky – fitting perfectly with the song’s title – quiet, beautiful, and mesmerising. Even as the instrumentation expands, the track remains restrained and intimate, demonstrating how effective simplicity can be.
Continuing the album’s reflective tone is “High Hopes”, which introduces a richer vocal layering. Multiple voices intertwine throughout the track, creating a sense of shared emotion and quiet optimism. Rather than relying on dramatic instrumentation, the song grows fuller through subtle musical additions, making the development feel immersive and natural. The balance between control and emotional depth is particularly effective, allowing the track to remain understated while still feeling impactful.
“Lungs” introduces a more upbeat energy compared to the earlier songs. Its driving rhythm and vivid imagery create momentum while still fitting within the album’s thoughtful atmosphere. The song uses the idea of movement through emotional and physical spaces within the body to reinforce its themes, while the combination of reflective lyricism and energetic instrumentation gave me slight Coldplay vibes. Despite the increased pace, the warmth and sincerity of the album remain intact, making the track an effective change of pace.
Returning to a quieter and more intimate style, “Are You Awake Tonight” felt like a late-night conversation that feels reflective and slightly distant. The gentle flow allows themes of memory and emotional residue to take centre stage, focusing on how past experiences continue to shape the present. The arrangement enhances this introspective mood, creating a sense of stillness where meaning is carried as much through silence and space as through sound, making it quietly powerful and emotionally resonant.
“New Day” provides a brighter contrast through its more optimistic tone, introducing a sense of renewal and forward momentum. The track opens with percussive, knocking-like sounds that immediately suggest awakening and movement, as though stepping into action after a period of stillness. While it carries more energy than some of the surrounding songs, it avoids feeling overly dramatic, instead maintaining a grounded, restrained optimism. This balance allows its hopeful tone to feel earned rather than forced, reinforcing the album’s broader themes of resilience and gradual emotional rebuilding.
“Little White Bird (Fragile World)” revisits the softer, more delicate sound built largely around piano and voice. The repeated refrain “oh little white bird” gives the song an almost lullaby-like quality, while gradually introduced instruments deepens the emotional impact without overwhelming the vocals. The result is a dreamlike and vulnerable piece that perfectly reflects the album’s fragile atmosphere.
Standing out as one of the album’s most atmospheric tracks is “The Widening Dark”. Its slow pace and extended absence of vocals create a haunting sense of suspense and contemplation. Rather than focusing on melody, the song relies on mood and texture, encouraging listeners to absorb the subtle details within the arrangement. While understated, it plays an important role in creating space for reflection within the album.
“My Foolish Heart” initially suggests a more upbeat direction before easing into a slower, more contemplative pace led by gentle piano. This shift creates a sense of emotional recalibration, as if the song is pulling back from surface-level energy to reveal something more vulnerable underneath. The track reinforces the album’s wider preference for subtlety and atmosphere over dramatic intensity, allowing feeling to build gradually rather than through climactic moments. Leaning toward indie folk and indie pop textures, it maintains an intimate quality that fits comfortably within the album’s cohesive emotional tone.
Balancing warmth and melancholy is “These Are the Days” through its focus on fragile hope and quiet reassurance. The track reflects on the attempt to hold onto meaningful moments even as they begin to slip away, creating a strong sense of nostalgia. Its emotional affect comes from contrast, pairing light and shadow in a way that feels deeply human. The reflective tone and subtle tension between optimism and uncertainty give the song a lingering emotional weight and a sense of bittersweet beauty.
Closing the album with a moving exploration of grief and loss is “In This Heart”.The track is stripped back and deliberate, allowing emotion to unfold slowly rather than resolve neatly. Repeated vocal ideas and minimal lyrical phrasing create a sense of exposure, almost like thoughts circling rather than concluding. The reserved arrangement keeps focus on emotional honesty, giving the song a meditative quality. It ends the album with quiet intensity, leaving a sense of unresolved but meaningful reflection.
