Ever since Damon Albarn’s Honest Jon label released the intriguing and stunning compilation of ‘Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music From South Africa’, the Shangaan Electro sound has crawled up from the underground rave world into the international limelight. And now, one of it’s most prominent frontrunners has announced a UK tour, with some European stints added as well.
Nozinja is the South African artist who has become famous for heading this electro dance craze. It draws on local folk tradition, Tsonga ‘disco’, kwaito and South African house, but with a futuristic 21st century spin on it.
Hailing from the streets of Limpopo and Soweto in South Africa, he has released a vast catalogue of cassettes, CD-Rs and DVDs on Nozinja Productions and has captured prolific fans amongst fellow artists such as Caribou, The Knife and Mount Kimbie. Followed with a high profile series of 12”s on Honest Jon’s, his tracks have seen remixing by the likes of Rashad & Spinn, Rocardo Villalobos and Hype Williams.
