If you took lemonade, Pop Rocks, a little bit of mud and some glitter you would get something that resembles how this EP from Farmer’s Wife sounds. It comes as part of the ongoing shoegaze renaissance bringing a sort of backwoods goth vibe to the genre. I’m talking about the feeling of soil on bare feet, the smell of the earth after it rains, decomposition and animal remains. It’s haunting, otherworldly and kind of sickening yet you can’t help but be lured in.
This EP is for the disgusting romantics, those who let their emotions eat away at them and consume them entirely. Between the weight of the bass and the airiness of the vocals provided by singer Molly Masson, we bear witness to a story of romance, withering and decay. Though the lyrical content is often intensely personal, and this can be felt through the delivery, it is also totally voyeuristic at times, leaving you bewildered as to what is real and what is not. This intentional disorientation brings you in close, only to push you as far away as possible. This is reflected throughout the entire EP as the noise is ever changing, floating above the clouds and dragging you back down into the dirt.
