The Mutts never Heel tour. I had the pleasure of seeing Leon Thomas at the Manchester Academy and what a time was had, but let’s start off with the basics.
Doors open at 7pm, I get there for 9pm, fashionably late as per usual. Technical difficulties I do apologise but Leon hasn’t hit the stage yet, so we count our blessings. Lights flash. Bang! Leon shows his face and I can already tell what time it is.
What can I say about Leon Thomas? He is a sensational artist but somehow an even better performer. I genuinely forgot how many hits he has on this album. There was a song for the ladies, song for the radio, song to cry to. Everything you need in one small package. I have a newfound respect for this man he is a multi-dimensional artist. From being on the mic singing his heart out, to doing guitar solos, to then doing drum solos. I’m watching this performance wondering what this man can’t do.
His crowd control is something to watch out for as well. With the overall theme of his album being a dog (hence the title of the tour) he asked the concert to bark when he came on stage, which I thought was quite funny. Not only that, but he also chucked roses at the crowd during the performances. It really added an extra level of spice to the show. An artist that can show their personality makes for a more memorable experience, something to look forward to, especially live where you’re trying to be entertained for the portion that they’re there for.
Leon Thomas’ crowd control really did pay off, as I am amongst the crowd I am seeing people order each other drinks, swaying together whilst they wave their phone lights and really taking in the atmosphere of the night. I think with such a talented artist he picked out a very good venue in the Manchester Academy because even with how big the venue is, he managed to make it feel so intimate and comfortable.
My main take away from this performance was that everyone should experience a Leon Thomas show at least once in your life. Even if you have not heard his music before, if the performance is anything like this one a great time will be had. However, I would recommend listening to Mutt if you haven’t already. Leon Thomas started off the concert by saying he just won a Grammy for this album calling this show a “celebration” and he treated it like that in the best way possible, it feels like such a victory lap. This is a Grammy worthy album and a Grammy worthy performance.
