From time to time, one of our contributors will recommend an artist/band they think deserves  your attention. No record labels, PR companies, bands or band’s management will ever have made these recommendations. It is simply one music fan putting their taste on the line in the hope of sharing good music. The questions are intended to give just a basic introduction to possibly your new favourite artist/band.

So without further ado, let’s crack on with another introduction, in which Silent Radio’s David McFarlane recommends Gnarwhals for your audible delectation.

THE GNARWHALS

THE GNARWHALS

Who are ya?

The Gnarwhals a.k.a. Bon’t De Beap, Mugz Money and Slurms McKenzie

Where are you from?

San Diego CA

How long have you been doing what you’re doing now?

We formed in 1979 and broke up in 1997 after the passing of our original drummer, but reformed in 2008 after relocating to Norway to get away from it all.

Is being a musician/musicians your full time job?

Yes but we all have pretty time consuming hobbies, notably Slurms (drums) who has a successful career making actual drum tutorial DVDs and we all love chilling by our frat’s pool.

Are there any obvious influences in your music?

Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 and hanging out by the pool

Are there any not so obvious influences in your music?

We are hugely influenced by the sacred “Breakfast Records” scene of the post-apocalyptic state of Yvanehtnioj which has been revealed to us by the whisperings of Bon’t’s beardworms.

Any musical Guilty Pleasures? Come on you can share, we’re all friends here!

Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 and foozball

Apart from yourself of course, what other band/artist would you recommend our readers check out?

Chuman and Springbreak for laughing and crying to respectively.

Tell us about the defining moment when you thought ‘Fuck, yes I want to be a musician!’

At our college buddy Joey ‘The Vest” Scott’s BBBQ the band sadly passed away in the pool so we jumped on their kit and played ‘No Cigar’ by Millencolin for ninety minutes.

Does what go on, on tour, stay on tour?

Well we live in the van so that’s a trick question. Except when we are by the pool so that is when we aren’t on tour and then we just usually chat about other times we’ve been by the pool rather than times we’ve been in the van. So I guess more yes than no.

What’s your most favouritist gig (as a gig goer), like, ever?

Municipal Waste at Scala 2008.

Who, in your wildest dreams would you like to collaborate with/be produced by?

Ali Boulala https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4Mxpxrce9U
