From time to time, one of our contributors will recommend an artist/band they think deserves  your attention. No record labels, PR companies, bands or band’s management will ever have made these recommendations. It is simply one music fan putting their taste on the line in the hope of sharing good music. The questions are intended to give just a basic introduction to possibly your new favourite artist/band.

So without further ado, let’s crack on with another introduction, in which Silent Radio Editor Simon Poole recommends The Piqnic for your audible delectation.

We’ve been active for about 3 years and it’s been just over a half year since Soushi joined the band.

  • Is being a musician your full time job? /

Shuya, Habuto & Hiromi: We all have other part-time jobs. We all want to become full-time musicians though.

Soushi: To be a full-time musician in Japan, you need to make pop music for the general public.

  • Are there any obvious influences in your music? /

Noise, ambient, shoegaze, folk and classical music. Electronic and psychedelic loops have been big influences on our way to compose music too.

  • Are there any not so obvious influences in your music? /

Habuto: I think a large amount of nature and easy-going life should be related.

Soushi: The place where we all live must be an influence. Hamamatsu is just a middle of Tokyo and Osaka and so on. I personally feel that Hamamatsu and Iwata are mixed by a group of people enjoying pop music as pop music and a group of people searching for totally different senses.

Hiromi: When I was a university student, one of the members of my ex. band used one of the songs by the ex. band without asking me to apply for a competition and they got through. I was frustrated by that and it was the moment.

Soushi: When I was a high school student, I managed to go to the final of a nationwide competition and it was the moment.

Habuto: I forgot. I love music and that’s why I play music now.

  • Does what goes on, on tour, stay on tour? /

Shuya, Habuto, Hiromi: No.

Shuya: Berlin Philharmonic I saw in Tokyo in winter 2012.

Hiromi: Chatmonchy I saw when I was a high school student. It was just so much fun.

Soushi: What I can only think of now is a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s Voodoo Child by an old guy I know when I didn’t know anything about guitars. The sound of the guitar and the way to use the wah pedal were perfect and I got so impressed.

Habuto: Radiohead I saw with my friend.
